of the week, at early dawn, they came unto the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.[2] And they entered in, and found not the body of 1 the Lord Jesus.[3] And it came to pass, while they were perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel:[4] and as they were affrighted and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the 2 living among the dead?[5] He 3 is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,[6] saying that the Son of man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.[7] And they remembered his words,[8] and returned from 4 the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.[9] Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James: and the other women with them told these things unto the apostles.[10] And these words appeared in their sight as idle talk; and they disbelieved them.[11] But 5 Peter arose, and ran unto the tomb; and stooping and looking in, he seeth the linen cloths by themselves; and he departed 6 to his home, wondering at that which was come to pass.[12] And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was threescore furlongs from Jerusalem.[13] And they communed with each other of all these things which had happened.[14] And it came to pass, while they communed and questioned together, that Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.[15] But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.[16] And he said unto them, What 7 communications are these that ye have one with another, as ye walk? And they stood still, looking sad.[17] And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said unto him, Dost 8 thou alone sojourn in Jerusalem and not know the things which are come to pass there in these days?[18] And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:[19] and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.[20] But we hoped that it was he who should redeem Israel. Yea and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things came to pass.[21] Moreover certain women of our company amazed us, having been early at the tomb;[22] and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.[23] And certain of them that were with us went to the tomb, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.[24] And he said unto them, O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in 9 all that the prophets have spoken![25] Behooved it not the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?[26] And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.[27] And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go further.[28] And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in to abide with them.[29] And it came to pass, when he had sat down with them to meat, he took the bread 10 and blessed; and breaking it he gave to them.[30] And their eyes wered, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.[31] And they said one to another, Was not our heart burning within us, while he spake to us in the way, while hed to us the scriptures?[32] And they rose up that very hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,[33] saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.[34] And they rehearsed the things that happened in the way, and how he was known of them in the breaking of the bread.[35] And as they spake these things, he himself stood in the midst of them, and 11 saith unto them, Peace be unto you.[36] But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they beheld a spirit.[37] And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and wherefore do questionings arise in your heart?[38] See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye behold me having.[39] And 12 when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.[40] And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here anything to eat?[41] And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish. 13[42] And he took it, and ate before them.[43] And he said unto them, These are my words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me.[44] Thend he their mind, that they might understand the scriptures;[45] and he said unto them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead the third day;[46] and that repentance and 14 remission of sins should be preached in his name unto all the nations, 15 beginning from Jerusalem.[47] Ye are witnesses of these things.[48] And behold, I send forth the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be clothed with power from on high.[49] And he led them out until they were over against Bethany: and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.[50] And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he parted from them, and 16 was carried up into heaven.[51] And they worshipped 17 him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:[52] and were continually in the temple, blessing God. Second Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians XII [1] I 1 MUST needs glory, though it is not expedient; but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.[2] I know a man in Christ, fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I know not; or whether out of the body, I know not; God knoweth), such a one caught up even to the third heaven.[3] And I know such a man (whether in the body, or apart from the body, I know not; God knoweth),[4] how that he was caught up into Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.[5] On behalf of such a one will I glory: but on mine own behalf I will not glory, save in my weaknesses.[6] For if I should desire to glory, I shall not be foolish; for I shall speak the truth: but I forbear, lest any man should account of me above that which he seeth me to be, or heareth from me.[7] And by reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, 2 that I should not to be exalted overmuch, there was given to me a thorn 3 in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, that I should not be exalted overmuch.[8] Concerning this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.[9] And he hath said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my power is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest 4 upon me.[10] Wherefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christs sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.[11] I am become foolish: ye compelled me; for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing was I behind the 5 very chiefest apostles, though I am nothing.[12] Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, 6 by signs and wonders and mighty 7 works.[13] For what is there wherein ye were made inferior to the rest of the churches, except it be that I myself was not a burden to you? forgive me this wrong.[14] Behold, this is the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be a burden to you: for I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.[15] And I will most gladly spend and be spent 8 for your souls. If I love you more abundantly, am I loved the less?[16] But be it so, I did not myself burden you; but, being crafty, I caught you with guile.[17] Did I take advantage of you by any one of them whom I have sent unto you?[18] I exhorted Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus take any advantage of you? walked we not in 9 the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?[19] Ye 10 think all this time that we are excusing ourselves unto you. In the sight of God speak we in Christ. But all things, beloved, are for your edifying.[20] For I fear, lest by any means, when I come, I should find you not such as I would, and should myself be found of you such as ye would not; lest by any means there should be strife, jealousy, wraths, factions, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults; 11[21] lest again when I come my God should humble me before you, and I should mourn for many of them that have sinned heretofore, and repented not of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they committed.
