the people, the 1 priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,[2] being sore troubled because they taught the people, and proclaimed in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.[3] And they laid hands on them, and put them in ward unto the morrow: for it was now eventide.[4] But many of them that heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.[5] And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;[6] and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest.[7] And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, By what power, or in what name, have ye done this?[8] Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders,[9] if we this day are examined concerning a good deed done to an impotent man, by 2 what means this man is made whole;[10] be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even in him 3 doth this man stand here before you whole.[11] He is the stone which was set at nought of you the builders, which was made the head of the corner.[12] And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved.[13] Now when they beheld the boldness of Peter and John, and had perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.[14] And seeing the man that was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.[15] But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,[16] saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle 4 hath been wrought through them, is manifest to all that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.[17] But that it spread no further among the people, let us threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in the name in this name.[18] And they called them, and charged them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.[19] But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it is right in the sight of God to hearken unto you rather than unto God, judge ye:[20] for we cannot but speak the things which we saw and heard.[21] And they, when they had further threatened them, let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people; for all men glorified God for that which was done.[22] For the man was more than forty years old, on whom this miracle 5 of healing was wrought.[23] And being let go, they came to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said unto them.[24] And they, when they heard it, lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, O Lord, 6 thou 7 that didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is:[25] who 8 by the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of your father David thy servant, didst say, Why did the Gentiles 9 rage, And the peoples imagine 10 vain things?[26] The kings of the earth set themselves in array, And the rulers were gathered together, Against the Lord, and against his Anointed: 11[27] for a truth in this city against thy holy Servant 12 Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles 13 and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together,[28] to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel foreordained to come to pass.[29] And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants 14 to speak thy word with all boldness,[30] while thou stretchest forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of thy holy Servant 15 Jesus.[31] And when they had prayed, the place was shaken wherein they were gathered together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spake the word of God with boldness.[32] And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and soul: and not one of them said that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.[33] And with great power gave the apostles their witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: 16 and great grace was upon them all.[34] For neither was there among them any that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,[35] and laid them at the apostles feet: and distribution was made unto each, according as any one had need.[36] And Joseph, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas (which is, being interpreted, Son of exhortation), 17 a Levite, a man of Cyprus by race,[37] having a field, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles feet. ing unto his death.[2] And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church which was in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judæa and Samaria, except the apostles.[3] And devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him.[4] But Saul laid waste the church, entering into every house, and dragging men and women committed them to prison.[5] They therefore that were scattered abroad went about preaching 1 the word.[6] And Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and proclaimed unto them the Christ.[7] And the multitudes gave heed with one accord unto the things that were spoken by Philip, when they heard, and saw the signs which he did.[8] For 2 from many of those that had unclean spirits, they came out, crying with a loud voice: and many that were palsied, and that were lame, were healed.[9] And there was much joy in that city.[10] But there was a certain man, Simon by name, who beforetime in the city used sorcery, and amazed the people 3 of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:[11] to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is that power of God which is called Great.[12] And they gave heed to him, because that of long time he had amazed them with his sorceries.[13] But when they believed Philip preaching 4 good tidings concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.[14] And Simon also himself believed: and being baptized, he continued with Philip; and beholding signs and great miracles 5 wrought, he was amazed.[15] Now when the apostles that were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:[16] who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit:[17] for as yet it was fallen upon none of them: only they had been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.[18] Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.[19] Now when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles hands the Holy 6 Spirit was given, he offered them money,[20] saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit.[21] But Peter said unto him, Thy silver perish with thee, because thou hast thought to obtain the gift of God with money.[22] Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: 7 for thy heart is not right before God.[23] Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray the Lord, if perhaps the thought of thy heart shall be forgiven thee.[24] For I see that thou art 8 in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.[25] And Simon answered and said, Pray ye for me to the Lord, that none of the things which ye have spoken come upon me.[26] They therefore, when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached 9 the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.[27] But an angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward 10 the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza: the same is desert.[28] And he arose and went: and behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship;[29] and he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.[30] And the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.[31] And Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?[32] And he said, How can I, except some one shall guide me? And he besought Philip to come up and sit with him.[33] Now the passage of the scripture which he was reading was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before his shearer is dumb,So heth not his mouth:[34] In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: His generation who shall declare? For his life is taken from the earth.[35] And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or some other?[36] And Philipd his mouth, and beginning from this scripture, preached 11 unto him Jesus.[37] And as they went on the way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch saith, Behold, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 12[38] And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.[39] And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, for he went on his way rejoicing.[40] But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached 13 the gospel to all the cities, till he came to Cæsarea.
