eased, Paul having sent for the disciples and exhorted them, took leave of them, and departed to go into Macedonia.[2] And when he had gone through those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece.[3] And when he had spent three months there, and a plot was laid against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he determined to return through Macedonia.[4] And there accompanied him as 1 far as Asia, Sopater of Beroea, the son of Pyrrhus; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.[5] But these had 2 gone before, and were waiting for us at Troas.[6] And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we tarried seven days.[7] And upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and prolonged his speech until midnight.[8] And there were many lights in the upper chamber where we were gathered together.[9] And there sat in the window a certain young man named Eutychus, borne down with deep sleep; and as Paul discoursed yet longer, being borne down by his sleep he fell down from the third story, and was taken up dead.[10] And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Make ye no ado; for his life is in him.[11] And when he was gone up, and had broken the bread, and eaten, and had talked with them a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.[12] And they brought the lad alive, and were not a little comforted.[13] But we, going before to the ship, set sail for Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, intending himself to go by 3 land.[14] And when he met us at Assos, we took him in, and came to Mitylene.[15] And sailing from thence, we came the following day over against Chios; and the next day we touched at Samos; and the 4 day after we came to Miletus.[16] For Paul had determined to sail past Ephesus, that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.[17] And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called to him the elders 5 of the church.[18] And when they were come to him, he said unto them,[19] Ye yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, after what manner I was with you all the time,[20] serving the Lord with all lowliness of mind, and with tears, and with trials which befell me by the plots of the Jews;[21] how I shrank not from declaring unto you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly, and from house to house,[22] testifying both to Jews and to Greeks repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. 6[23] And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:[24] save that the Holy Spirit testifieth unto me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.[25] But I hold not my life of any account as dear unto myself, so 7 that I may accomplish my course, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel 8 of the grace of God.[26] And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, shall see my face no more.[27] Wherefore I testify unto you this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.[28] For I shrank not from declaring unto you the whole counsel of God.[29] Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, 9 to feed the church of the 10 Lord which he purchased 11 with his own blood.[30] I know that after my departing grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock;[31] and from among your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.[32] Wherefore watch ye, remembering that by the space of three years I ceased not to admonish every one night and day with tears.[33] And now I commend you to God, 12 and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you the inheritance among all them that are sanctified.[34] I coveted no mans silver, or gold, or apparel.[35] Ye yourselves know that these hands ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.[36] In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring ye ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.[37] And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down and prayed with them all.[38] And they all wept sore, and fell on Pauls neck and kissed him,[39] sorrowing most of all for the word which he had spoken, that they should behold his face no more. And they brought him on his way unto the ship. Note 1. Many ancient authorities omit as far as Asia. [back]Note 2. Many ancient authorities read came, and were waiting. [back]Note 3. Or, on foot. , then we knew that the island was called Melita. 1[2] And the barbarians showed us no common kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us all, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.[3] But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out by 2 reason of the heat, and fastened on his hand.[4] And when the barbarians saw the venomous creature hanging from his hand, they said one to another, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped from the sea, yet Justice hath not suffered to live.[5] Howbeit he shook off the creature into the fire, and took no harm.[6] But they expected that he would have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but when they were long in expectation and beheld nothing amiss come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.[7] Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius; who received us, and entertained us three days courteously.[8] And it was so, that the father of Publius lay sick of fever and dysentery: unto whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laying his hands on him healed him.[9] And when this was done, the rest also that had diseases in the island came, and were cured:[10] who also honored us with many honors; and when we sailed, they put on board such things as we needed.[11] And after three months we set sail in ship of Alexandria which had wintered in the island, whose sign was The 3 Twin Brothers.[12] And touching at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.[13] And from thence we made 4 a circuit, and arrived at Rhegium and after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli;[14] where we found brethren, and were entreated to tarry with them seven days: and so we came to Rome.[15] And from thence the brethren, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns; whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.[16] And when we entered into Rome, Paul 5 was suffered to abide by himself with the soldier that guarded him.[17] And it came to pass, that after three days he called together those 6 that were the chief of the Jews: and when they were come together, he said unto them, I, brethren, though I had done nothing against the people, or the customs of our fathers, yet was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans:[18] who, when they had examined me, desired to set me at liberty, because there was no cause of death in me.[19] But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had aught whereof to accuse my nation.[20] For this cause therefore did I entreat 7 you to see and to speak with me: for because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.[21] And they said unto him, We neither received letters from Judæa concerning thee, nor did any of the brethren come hither and report or speak any harm of thee.[22] But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.[23] And when they had appointed him a day, they came to him into his lodging in great number; to whom he expounded the matter, testifying the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning till evening.[24] And some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.[25] And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Spirit through Isaiah the prophet unto your fathers,[26] saying, Go thou unto this people, and say, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand; And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive:[27] For this peoples heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed; Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them.[28] Be it known therefore unto you, that this salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles: they will also hear. 8[29] And he abode two whole years in his own hired dwelling, and received all that went in unto him,[30] preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, none forbidding him.
